10 Basic Rules of Badminton
1. A serve must travel diagonally (see below for more info)
2. During the serve the birdie should always be hit from below the waist.
3. Each side can strike the birdie only once before it passes over the net.
4. A point is scored each time you win a rally.
5. If you score a point on YOUR SERVE, you switch serving courts with your partner.
6. You win a rally when you hit the birdie and it touches the floor of the opponent's side of the court or when the opponent commits a fault.
7. At no time during the game should a player touch the net, with their racket or body. (penalty is loss of the rally)
8. The birdie should not be carried on or come to rest on the racket.
9. A player should not reach over the net to hit the birdie.
10. The birdie hitting the ceiling or basketball hoop, is counted as a fault.

Serving
- You must serve diagonally
- If you are in the blue serving square your serve must land in the other blue square, if you are in the green square your serve must land in the other green square
- You can stand anyplace behind the short service line when serving
- Your serve must go over the next and last past the short service line on the other side.
- Serves that land short of the service line or on the wrong side of the court are a point for the other team!
Begginers Badminton Skills
Handshake Grip
- "V" between thumb & index
- Index & thumb tight grip
- Other fingers loose
- Little finger at butt of racket
FOREHAND UNDERHAND CLEAR
- Bring racket back
- Contact birdie below waist
- Follow through on contact
- Drive opponent back above net (used often in doubles)
FOREHAND OVERHEAD CLEAR
- The racket is taken back to the back-scratching position, wrist cocked, as one moves into position
- Shoulders point to net
- Hit the shuttle, extending as high as possible with the racket face pointing slightly up
FOREHAND Serve
- Hold birdie with non-racket hand
- Bring racket back
- Contact birdie below waist
- Follow through on contact
- Drive opponent back, aim for back of service court
Intermediate Badminton Skills
Drop Shot
- This is a shot that will go from the back of our court to close to the net on the other team's court.
- It consists in making the other player believe that we are going to do a clear.
Net Drop Shot (aka Hairpin)
- This shot is made from close to the net on your court to close to the net on the opposing team's court.
- The birdie should pass almost brushing the net to avoid having the opposing player attack it.
Drive
- The drive is a straight shot that is done from the middle of the court to the middle of the opposite court.
- Used to get rid of the birdie in front of you
- Has the objective of hitting the body of the opposing player.
- It is the most commonly used shot in the game of doubles.
